Growing up to the sounds of Run DMC and Areosmith, Master Shortie is one of the UK’s freshest acts on the urban music scene. Following the disappointment from the MOBO Awards 2009 for “best new comer” (won by JLS), Shortie’s album titled A.D.H.D preformed well with a good reception.
Shortie truly shows how far indie, electro, grime, rap and pop can be blended together, although with some tracks that may sound annoying or just simply wrong, there is something about the reason why it shouldn’t be mixed together that makes it work. Shorite has taken a huge risk in collaborating genres that don’t even sit on the same self at music stores together! But that risk has paid off well.
The album demonstrates the amazing vocal layering Shortie can compose in tracks like “Have it your way” and “Under the moon”. And yet what UK album isn’t complete with the big dance record, “Bringing it back” competing with tracks like “Holiday” – Dizzie, “Your Not Alone” – Tinchy Stryder and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” – Bashy.
However, the largest pull back for Shortie is that he does not seem to get the recognition most first time acts get. In many ways A.D.H.D reminds me of The Dream’s first album “Love Hate” with hot tracks like “Swagger Chick”, built on long lost song samples. Overall, I see Shortie making a return very soon, one thing I must say is missing is a slow jam (there isn’t anything emotional about this album). But for the young urban listeners this album is aimed at it will be one that doesn’t gather dust.
I see Shortie looking back at this album (a couple of years from now) and seeing his hard work and on-point swagger really saved him from being “another UK act”, even though i have the a feeling that album number two will be a true killer, A.D.H.D is one that’s gonna stick around for along time.
