Mariah Carey - Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel

Okay, so it’s been a year since we herd from “the best selling female artist of all time”, Mariah Carey, to be fair after her 2008 album E=MC2 you would of thought the girl would of stopped at eighteen number ones!

Yet, as per usual MIMI shook it all off and had a heart to heart session with co-producer The-Dream. “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” is the “young” Carey we all saw back in 90s with a “Vision of Love”. “Memoirs” does what it says in the title, going back to Mariah’s sound during the begging of her career; she’s even wearing her hair in lose curls like she used to!

The album tells a story of love, even though at moments you notice Carey struggling to keep those notes on the music sheet, it’s living proof that the 40 year old has still got it. With rumours still circling that the album release date was pushed back so Carey wouldn’t have to face a head to head with Whitney’s “I Look To You”, it has become clear that this album wasn’t about the record sales (as most of them do!), this was about Mariah looking over her past.

With MIMI dumping her teen-friendly cuts of previous albums Emancipation of MIMI and E=MC2, she has embraced the pop ballads very well. MIMI has mixed elements of the 90s ballad swings with the modern urban sounds of the ‘00s (credit to the Dream), and it’s almost a relief to say this isn’t another Mariah ultra-ego album with her hair being blown back much like 2005’s Emancipation of MIMI. With “I Want to know what love is” being placed as Mariah’s best ballad cover since 1993’s “Without You”, no Mariah album is complete without the amazing vocal layering, in songs such as H.A.T.E.U and Ribbon, all tied together with the interludes and reprises.

Overall…it’s on of those albums you put on after a hard day, for the fella’s one that you may play to the ladies, and for the ladies; one of those albums you put on when you watch the rain fall on your window. I truly think that one day, Mariah will look back at “Memoirs” and maybe place this album at the top after “Butterfly”, but be prepared, rumours from Island Def Jam records state Mariah is in the studio right now working on her thirteenth studio album!
